Avoid the holiday blues

Unfortunately while the holiday season is a time of happiness for many, for some it’s a time of depression and anxiety. There are many reasons for this ranging from stress, tensions with family members, financial challenges, and loneliness.

Understanding this is important not only for avoiding it in yourself, but in helping others who might feel depressed, without you being aware of it.

To avoid depression in yourself, don’t overextend yourself, avoid any perfectionist tendencies you might have and keep things in perspective. Try to understand what is bringing negative feelings and face the challenge head-on rather than let it linger in your subconcious. If financies are worrying you, determine a budget you can live with, and stick to it, knowing you’ve been reasonable rather than out of control.

To help others, be a good listener, and try to sense how they are feeling. Be there for them and supportive without only talking about yourself. If there is sunlight, get out for a walk in the sun, as some people can be negatively affected by not enough sunlight (called seasonal affective disorder or SAD).

Look for solutions, nobody has to let depression linger if they can figure out the underlying issue and find solutions. Certainly in many situations there is no easy answer, however at minimum it’s helpful to be mindful of your own state of mind and others during the holiday seasons, and be a source of positivity as much as possible.

I’ve only touched on a few aspects, if you want to learn more about this subject there is of course a wealth of information available via the search engines.

  1. Ive found that regular yoga and meditation helps me fight winter blues. It also keeps me healthy and my immune system strong.

  2. Helping others is another great way to jump-start the holiday spirit. One small action of mine recently set off a chain of events that helped several less fortunate people, and I realize now in hindsight that I wasn’t really in the Christmas mood until that happened. In my case, it had a lot to do with being too busy to enjoy the season.

  3. I decide to take my eyes off myself and allow myself to have a great holiday
