Self Growth while driving alone
I’ve found that during long drives or commuting to work, we have a very good opportunity for self-growth.
The first benefit of driving is in getting away from all the things competing for your attention. Television, computers, telephones, games, friends, family, all can demand your full attention. If you just keep the radio off, you have a good opportunity to think about things. You can set goals, think about areas of your life you’d like to improve, think about how best to use your time that day, or anything else important to your personal growth.
Simply listening to music can be a good way to lift your spirits. Find music you know that improves your mood and make use of it! Or if you like to sing, nows your chance, no matter had bad you sing ;-)
Another possibility is to leverage the time to listen to audio books. I use an IPod connected with an audio tape cassette adapter, or you can use an FM transmitter. I’m a subscriber to Audible which assures you plenty of good material on a regular basis, and these can be download to IPods. In additional to self-help type audios, I frequently enjoy historical stories which are both educational and I believe are important to life, as it helps put things into perspective. The previous link gives you a signup offer better than you’d normally get.
Dealing with bad drivers is another opportunity. How do you react when someone cuts in front of you, is driving too slow, or tailgating you. Do you get angry? If you believe YOU should control your emotions rather than another driver, then you can use this to practice not getting angry. Clearly anger doesn’t change the situation, so why be angry? By all means if you enjoy being angry then continue, but otherwise it’s your choice unless you let your emotions run on “autopilot”.
I hope this has given someone at least one good idea to make their driving more enjoyable, or more beneficial.
