However, it’s only just recently when habits were taken seriously as one of the most factors that determine success, whether it’s in the area of health and fitness, career, or family life and relationships.

1. Habits Create Structure
For many people, the first step in taking their lives back is to create structure and order in their lives. This is because good habits create routine, order, and efficiency, promote discipline and allow you to expend energy on things that truly matter. Of course, it is important to consciously think and choose what good habits you need to incorporate into your life and to apply these habits regularly so that they stick.
2. Habits Trump Motivation
Since habits are made regularly and often automatically, they tend to trump motivation when it comes to generating that push to start something, to continue pursuing a project, or to give one last effort to reach a goal. Motives tend to wax and wane depending on your circumstances, while habits are ingrained into your daily routine, which makes them easier to do.
3. Habits Reduce Instances of Procrastination
Habits are made on an almost automatic level, and this is a good thing when it comes to good habits. When an activity becomes a habit, you don’t need to think hard and long about doing it, you go ahead and do it! For example, making a habit of waking up at 5 a.m. to run can be challenging to do for the first two or three weeks, but keep at it, and you will notice that it gets easier as time goes by. By being consistent about waking up at this hour, you train your body to do this without much thinking and negative self-talk, two things that encourage procrastination.
4. Habits Are Changeable
The good thing about habits is that you have total control over them. Unlike other factors that affect how you can succeed, habits depend on how you act. If you have bad habits, you need to decide that you want to change and commit to doing the same thing every day to eliminate this negative habit. Do it long enough, and you will see results.
5. Good Habits Influence Every Aspect of Your Life
The benefit of good habits is not limited to a specific area in your life, like work or relationships. Good, general habits can have effects that will ripple through all areas of your life, allowing you to save time and cognitive energy that could be better spent making more significant life decisions. For example, forming a habit to wake up early in the morning to meditate helps you create a positive mindset that you can apply as you go to work, exercise in the gym, or deal with a difficult family member or co-worker.
Habits can be both good and bad. However, deciding to choose good habits and doing them often enough so that they stick could easily be the most crucial step towards creating a life that is productive and meaningful.
