1. Swedish Massage
If you’re on the hunt for a gentle massage to relax with, a Swedish massage is what you want.
Swedish massages focus on relieving muscle tension. They do this with gentle strokes and light pressure.
These massages are especially popular for massage beginners because it’s a mild introduction to the therapy.
2. Deep Tissue Massage
A deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements as a Swedish massage, but for a different purpose. A deep tissue massage uses more pressure and other techniques to promote deep muscle healing.
For this reason, a deep tissue massage is meant less for relaxation and more for muscle pain. It’s especially successful for athletes and people who are healing from muscle injuries.
Make sure you tell your therapist about any injuries you have, though.
3. Ayurvedic Massage
Ayurvedic massage is a much different experience from Swedish massage and deep tissue massage. This therapy uses some of the long-standing healing principles from ancient India.
The ayurvedic massage focuses on balancing your body, mind, and spirit. Therapists do this by massaging certain trigger points as well as using essential oils, herbs, and other enhancements.
It’s a great choice for those who are going through emotional strain or anxiety.
4. Hot Stone Massage
A hot stone massage is one of the most common menu items you’ll see at a relaxing spa. During these massages, therapists use many of the same techniques they would for a Swedish or deep tissue massage. The difference is that they use hot stones in their hands.
The stones glide along your skin smoothly and easily. The heat from them, however, improves the blood flow throughout your muscles. This gives your muscles more in-depth healing and relaxation.
5. Shiatsu Massage
Most people have seen the term “shiatsu massage” because so many home massagers use it. What makes it a shiatsu massage?
The shiatsu technique focuses on rhythmic, pulsing movements. It uses many of the same kneading motions as other types of massage but in an almost musical way. Like ayurvedic massage, it’s meant to offer both physical and mental restoration.

There are many different types of massage, and we could talk all day about which ones are best for which situations or goals. The fact is that it’s all a matter of personal preference.
