Below are five simple productivity tips that’ll help you manage your time better!
1. Stay off Your Cell Phone
Everyone, including doctors, have a hard time saying no to their phones. You may be getting a lot of phone calls. Or, you’re spending too much time on your phone doing social media during your break.
Either way, if being on your phone is taking away from tasks and seeing patients, that’s not a good scenario.
Not to mention, if you have a wRVU compensation plan, it’s important to see plenty of patients! You want to be able to give your patients and co-workers 100% in all that you do.
Put your phone in a secure location and only check it when there’s time to do so. If someone has an emergency, they can always reach you at the office phone!
2. Don’t Get Distracted
Distractions are everywhere, especially when you’re a busy doctor.
Do you have set work hours? Setting boundaries such as having specific work hours will keep you on task.
You should set other work boundaries too, such as stay away from chatty colleagues.
Even though it’s good to catch up every once in a while, don’t allow it to eat up your day. You won’t get nearly as much accomplished!
So be sure not to let everything under the sun distract you.
If you don’t reign in the distractions, you’re going to get burned out. And you won’t be as productive as you could be.
3. Be Alright With Asking for Help
As a doctor, you may feel like you need to come up with every solution.
But making your patients a priority is essential. And that’s precisely why you can’t possibly take care of your patients and everything else.
For example, you might be trying to keep all the patient files organized even though that’s not your job.
Even if it may help you become more familiar with a patient, rely on your assistant for this task. They can take notes and make it easy for you to access them on your computer.
Getting stuck on tasks that will take away from your work can lead to stress. When you’re feeling bogged down with everything, you’ll be less productive.
It’s okay to rely on others and ask for help when needed.
4. Make an Action Plan Each Day
Every day before leaving the hospital, take ten minutes to make an action plan.
You may need to follow up with a patient or do more research on a diagnosis. Whatever tasks are most important, make a note of them.
Making time to come up with an action list will do just that — urge you to take action!
It’s funny how, when something gets written down, it usually gets done!
5. Take Care of Yourself
It’s hard to do your job when you’re giving more and more of yourself.
Of course, taking care of your patients, and doing your best to treat them is vital. But if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to take care of others!
Make yourself a priority by going on family vacations. Sitting outside and reading a good book is also an excellent way to make time for yourself.
Figure out which activities help you unwind the most and do those things.
Taking time away will help you enjoy your job more and come back feeling refreshed.
